Top resorts in Europe for a short ski break

If you are longing to be in the mountains but can’t spare a week’s holiday, check out our suggestions for a short ski holiday. It is easy to add a day or two onto a weekend to get the most out of your free time. I’m passionate about skiing and have plenty of experience from working multiple ski seasons in the Alps. All the recommendations are resorts and areas I have personally visited; they’re ideal for a three- or four-night ski break.

Austria

Austria is known for having traditional Alpine villages, cosy mountain restaurants and a lively après-ski scene.  There are some excellent possibilities in Austria if you choose to fly into Innsbruck Airport.

Ötztal

The Ötztal valley in the Tyrol region of Austria is a good option, with easy transfers, around an hour and a half from Innsbruck. The two main resorts are Sölden and Gurgl, comprising Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. There is more than enough terrain to explore in a few days of skiing, with an excellent bus service connecting the areas.

The glaciers in Sölden give this resort a long season, from November through to the end of April. Sölden is the stage for the first FIS Alpine ski race, held every year at the end of October. Gurgl’s altitude makes it one of the highest non-glacier ski areas, with a reputation for being snow sure.

The Stubai Glacier

At the end of the Stubai Valley in the Tyrol region, this small Austrian ski area is Austria’s largest glacier ski area. An efficient lift system takes you quickly up the mountain from the valley floor. The snow is excellent; the season is long and the views over the surrounding peaks spectacular. 

Stay at the Jagdhof in Neustift im Stubaital. This luxury hotel is less than half an hour from Innsbruck; a complimentary transfer minibus service is run daily by the Jagdhof to the lift stations for the Stubai Glacier.

Switzerland

Switzerland has some of the highest mountains in the Alps and breathtaking scenery. Swiss trains are famous for being punctual; the connections are superb, and they are clean and comfortable. Skiing in Switzerland can be expensive when compared with other countries.

Davos Klosters Mountains

The ski area of Davos Klosters is a firm favourite for skiers looking for a good variety of skiing on a short ski break. Fly into Zurich Airport; from the train station within the airport you can hop on a train, and with a few changes you will arrive in the heart of Graubünden, the region where the towns of Davos and Klosters are located. 

Davos has accommodation to suit all budgets with plentiful availability for shorter trips. The skiing is extensive, the views magnificent, and nothing can beat a Swiss fondue or freshly made rösti in a cosy mountain restaurant.

Sweden

If you haven’t thought of Sweden as a ski destination, then think again. It is perfect for a short ski break. The high latitude preserves snow; when other European ski areas are struggling, Sweden has plentiful amounts of snow. It is much cheaper than destinations in France, Austria and Switzerland. The Swedish people are friendly and welcoming.

Sälen

Sälen has long been a well-kept secret amongst Stockholmers who love to ski. It has the huge advantage of being enviably close to the Scandinavian Mountains Airport. With the recent increase in the number of airlines flying directly here, getting a short ski fix in Sälen is easy. The transfer times are so short that getting on the afternoon of arrival is a real possibility. The snow quality is excellent, although the mountains are not high; it can be extremely cold.

Stöten, with a less than twenty-minute transfer time, is the highest ski area. It has a mix of easy greens and blues as well as the steeper reds and black runs. 

An excellent place to stay is the Hotel Bügelhof in Lindvallen, a cosy and comfortable hotel ideally situated steps from a lift. From Lindvallen, direct buses run to the neighbouring Skistar resorts of Tandådalen and Hundfjället.

France

France has always been a favourite destination of mine, and somewhere I have worked the most ski seasons. With its proximity to the Swiss border and Geneva airport, there are good options for a short ski break in the Northern Alps, with very reasonable transfer times.

Chamonix

Chamonix is the home of Alpine skiing in France, an area you must have on your list if you haven’t already skied here. The scenery is stunning, with Mont Blanc towering majestically over the town. There are plenty of transfer options; from Geneva, it’s just over an hour in good conditions. 

The ski areas are not interlinked; an efficient train service runs along the valley, giving easy access to the high skiing in Grands Montets, Argentière, as well as the village of Vallorcine. From Vallorcine you can explore the Balme ski area and drop down into Le Tour. 

Stay in the centre of Chamonix, where there is a good variety of accommodation, restaurants and nightlife and the direct lift to the Brévent ski area. From Chamonix you can take the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the highest cable car in France, for a breathtaking panoramic view.

Grand Massif domain

The Grand Massif is a large, interlinked ski area in the Haute Savoie region with skiing for all abilities. There is more than enough terrain to explore on a short ski break. The transfer times from Geneva Airport are short, allowing you to get more time on the slopes.

Flaine, a purpose-built ski resort, has an excellent snow record with long sweeping runs to the resort from the top of the Grands Platières Gondola. Tree-lined pistes just above the town are great in poor visibility. Stay at the RockyPop Hotel right in the centre of Flaine for a fun and unique holiday experience.

The village of Samoëns is the place to be based if you are looking for a traditional Savoyard experience. This charming village has excellent lifts to the wider ski area of the Grand Massif. It has retained its character, unlike other French resorts which have expanded in all directions.

The Portes du Soleil

The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest ski areas in the Haute Savoie region of France. There are multiple resorts, both French and Swiss, with Châtel, Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz being the largest. 

The town of Morzine is popular with British skiers for a short ski break. It is easy to get to from Geneva Airport and has a good variety of accommodation from self-catering to luxury hotels. From Morzine you can easily get to either Avoriaz or Les Gets. Morzine has all the facilities you need for an excellent holiday as well as lively nightlife.

The pedestrian resort of Avoriaz, perched high on cliffs, is a drive up the mountain from Morzine. It is a superb place to stay, being a true ski-in/ski-out destination. There is a vast area you can explore from Avoriaz, with a great variety of runs to suit any level of skier. You can easily get to Châtel as well as go further afield to the Swiss resorts of Champéry and Morgins. 

From Avoriaz, you can ski all the way down to the bottom of the Prodains cable car. A bus service regularly runs from here to the centre of Morzine.

Whether you are looking for stunning mountain scenery, traditional village ski resorts or super fast transfers from airports to resorts, there is something here for you. I recommend you avoid the crowds of the peak weeks of Christmas, New Year, half term, and the French school holidays; accommodation will prove expensive in these weeks. January has a good record for snow conditions and empty pistes; March is great for longer days in the mountains with sunny weather.
