The Jagdhof Spa Hotel – perfect for a short stay in the Tyrol mountains, Austria

“The mountains are calling, and I must go” This saying from the Scottish Mountaineer John Muir rings true to many people. To be in the mountains is good for the soul, the beautiful landscapes and crisp mountain air lift the soul and ease the cares of modern-day life. For an exceptional short visit to the Austrian mountains, the five-star Jagdhof Spa Hotel in Neustift im Stubaital in the Tyrol Region of Austria has everything you could want. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains this luxury hotel, a member of the world-renowned Relais & Châteaux Hotels, welcomes you with cosy and stylish accommodation, friendly staff, an award-winning spa and gourmet dining options.   

The Jagdhof Spa Hotel

The décor in the hotel is stunning, and natural wood is prevalent throughout the public areas and rooms, creating a warm and comfortable environment. The hand-carved wooden ceiling in the restaurant, overlooking the terrace, is an example of the attention to detail and craftsmanship used when building the hotel. Artefacts from the Tyrolean region, including beautifully painted wooden furniture, adorn the walls and corridors.

We stayed in a Zwölfer room, a deluxe double, which felt as large as a suite. It was spacious and warm with ample storage, subdued lighting, a very comfortable bed and a stylish seating area with a table.

The view from the balcony of the valley stretching towards the glacier in the distance was mesmerising, great for breathing in the fresh mountain air. The bathroom was good-sized, with a walk-in shower, double sinks and a beautiful deep bath to soak in. Molton Brown toiletries were provided as well as robes and slippers for use in the spa area.

There are room types to suit all needs, from single rooms to double rooms, luxurious suites and spacious apartments. Families are well catered for with suites and apartments designed for two to five guests. Board can either be on a bed and breakfast basis or half board, including a six-course dinner.

Skiing at the Stubai Glacier ski area

We are avid skiers and were keen to ski at the Stubai Glacier area, a short distance from the hotel. We had brought our ski boots but needed to hire skis for two days. When I enquired at the hotel reception, they provided us with a discount voucher for the Sport 2000 Hofer ski shop, a short walk away in the centre of Neustift. We were delighted with the quality of the skis we rented. A definite plus was the return service provided by the shop; we left our skis in the ski room at the hotel to be collected by the shop at the end of our stay.

Getting to the two ski lifts, the Eisgratbahn and Gamsgartenbahn, to access the Stubai Glacier ski area was very straightforward. The Jagdhof Hotel runs a daily free shuttle minibus to and from the bottom of the lifts, bookable in advance at reception, the evening before. There is a choice of three departure times in the morning and three return times in the afternoon. In just over twenty minutes, we were at the lift station. There were no queues when we visited, and we were up the mountain in no time at all.

The Stubai Glacier is Austria’s largest glacier ski area with great high-altitude skiing from October through to May. As it is a glacier ski area the snow quality is excellent with plenty of wide sweeping runs perfect for practising your turns. There is a good choice of red or blue runs with several ski routes running down to the valley suitable for advanced skiers.

The Eisgratbahn, the longest 3S cable car in the Alps, with a length of 4,686 meters, whisks you up the mountain from the valley in a mere nine minutes. It passes through a middle station also served by the Gamsgarten cable car which runs parallel from the bottom of the valley to a point slightly lower than the top of the Eisgratbahn.

From the top of the Eisgratbahn, the Schaufeljochbahn Gondola travels further up to the highest point in the ski area, the Schaufeljoch ridge at an altitude of 3,170 metres. The view of the surrounding mountains is spectacular, with numerous three-thousand-metre peaks dominating the landscape. 

A combination of chair lifts and T-bar drag lifts enables you to easily explore the wider area. Make sure to take time to stop at the top of the ridges to soak in the beautiful mountain views. 

For a tasty lunch break, try the restaurant at the top of the Gamsgarten cable, the Restaurant zur Goldenen Gams, which has an open sun terrace and a delicious menu of local mountain specialities. There are two restaurants and a café at the top of the Eisgrat mountain station, or venture even higher to eat at Jochdohle, the highest restaurant in Austria.

The skiing at the Stubai Glacier area was excellent, and the time to get on the chair lifts was quick with little time wasted in a queue.

For non-skiers, there are plenty of other activities to make the most of your stay in the mountains.

jSpa at the Jagdhof Spa Hotel

The jSpa at the Jagdhof is outstanding, it was awarded the accolade of the top spa in a Relais & Châteaux Hotel in 2024. The Spa Chalet is adjacent to the pool area, the large pool has both an indoor and outdoor area joined together by a gate. Everything you would expect in a spa, and more, is there to be enjoyed – it is a perfect way to relax and recharge after skiing or to just unwind and have a restful time. 

Built in the style of a traditional Austrian mountain chalet sunburnt wood taken from old Tyrolean barns and farmhouses give the chalet a warm and cosy feel. 

The different areas of the Spa Chalet include the soothing aqua meditation room, the tepidarium, the laconium, the steam grotto, the Tyrolean-style Finnish sauna, and the saltwater inhalation grotto to name a few. Why not recline on a comfortable water bed under a starry ceiling or relax in the panoramic lounge area, or the spacious reading area with its gently swinging chairs which are very restful. It is easy to lose all track of time in this heavenly spa.

The use of the spa facilities is free to all guests over the age of fifteen who are staying at the hotel.

Divine spa treatments are available to book in advance, choose from facial treatments, massages, anti-ageing treatments or spa rituals, all tailor-made to individual needs. All the products used are based on natural ingredients to gain maximum effect.

If you want a hotel that has proper gym facilities, the Jagdhof Spa Hotel has a good fitness and gym area, and yoga sessions are also run at the hotel.

The hotel organises daily outdoor activities in the surrounding area. Why not try your hand at ice curling in the Jagdhof garden, tobogganing or hiking in the local area?

Dining at the Jagdhof Spa Hotel

The lovely bar, with an open fire and plenty of comfortable seating, is ideal for relaxing and unwinding at the end of the day. Take time out for a pre-dinner drink from the extensive drink menu, which includes an excellent choice of enticing-sounding cocktails.

Dining at the Jagdhof Spa Hotel was a highlight of our stay; we were on a half-board basis with dinner each evening in the cosy restaurant. The hotel produces a daily bulletin, available at breakfast, with lots of useful information and, most importantly, the menu options for the evening meal. The menu changes daily with two set options: the jCuisine for lovers of gourmet food and the jBalance, designed to be a lighter, healthier choice. Both menus have six courses, a soup, salad bar and cheese selection as well as a starter, main course and dessert. You can choose to leave out one or more of the courses, as we did after our first evening.

The menus offer a good choice for vegetarians, gluten-free, lactose-free and other dietary requirements are well catered for.

All the ingredients used in the kitchen are top-quality, sourced from local producers where possible. The cuisine has a strong emphasis on local Austrian dishes. 

The dishes were beautifully presented, a feast for the eyes, and looked mouthwatering. The marinated couscous starter with pomegranate, chilli tofu and herbs was a light and fresh dish to start the meal. 

I could not resist the baked organic Camembert with herbs, apricot, and thyme compote. This starter was exceptional with soft camembert oozing out of a crispy coating.

There are daily fish options in the main course section. The Pikeperch fish fillet with herb beurre Blanc, Pak choi and Fregola was a picture on the plate. It was full of flavour and well-cooked.

The medium roasted pork fillet with cognac pepper sauce, grilled mushrooms, broccoli, and lovage puree was perfectly cooked, succulent and delicious.

The desserts sounded so enticing that we had to sample them, even though we had probably eaten enough.

I particularly enjoyed the Crème Catalana with wild berries and sorbet. The variation of apricot with verbena and almond was an exceptional dessert.

Jagdhof Spa Hotel has an extensive wine cellar containing around four hundred local Austrian wines as well as internationally renowned wines. There is also a choice of selected wines by the glass. The sommelier is on hand to guide guests through the wine list with expert recommendations.

The Jagdhof Spa Hotel has a smaller, more intimate, fine-dining restaurant, the Hubertusstube, which seats eight to ten diners. Tables must be reserved in advance for this culinary experience, it was closed for a short staff break during our visit. The Hubertusstube was recently awarded one Michelin Star in the annual awards.

Travel to the Jagdhof Spa Hotel is stress-free; it is best to fly to Innsbruck Airport, the closest airport. The transfer time from Innsbruck to the Jagdhof Spa Hotel is around thirty minutes. The hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the airport for a fee.

We were guests at the Jagdhof Spa Hotel for three nights on a half-board basis, with ski passes organised separately. This gave us time to explore the Stubai Glacier ski area and sample the heavenly spa. For a ski and spa stay, the hotel offers packages starting from three nights half board, with two days skiing including lift passes.
