Ifuru Island: The Perfect Blend of Fun, Relaxation, and Island Charm

The Maldives has long been a bucket-list destination, but with so many islands offering something different, it can be hard to know where to start. Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquillity, family-friendly activities, or a romantic getaway, each island has its unique charm, making the decision both exciting and overwhelming. Tucked away in the beautiful Raa Atoll, Ifuru Island, a 5-star 24-hour premium all-inclusive resort, brings a refreshingly playful twist to the traditional Maldivian getaway. Unlike many of its more serious counterparts, Ifuru is all about keeping things social, fun, and just a little cheeky. It strikes the ideal balance between laid-back island vibes and affordable luxury, offering plenty of opportunities for both adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re looking for carefree fun or want to unwind in an idyllic setting, Ifuru promises a unique island experience.

Travel and location

Travelling to the Maldives is straightforward – it takes around 10 to 11 hours on direct flights from the UK. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic offer non-stop flights from London to Malé, while other airlines including Emirates and Qatar connect through Dubai or Doha. Opting for an overnight flight, as we did, makes the journey easier.

Ifuru Island has its own private domestic airport, so getting there is as seamless as it is exciting. The domestic flights take 27 minutes from Male or you can get a 45-minute seaplane, which provides stunning views of the turquoise lagoons and lush islands.

Ifura is located in the Raa Atoll, which is known for its rich biodiversity and vibrant marine life. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand beaches, and an abundance of coral reefs teeming with colourful fish, the atoll is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

About Ifuru

We were warmly welcomed by happy faces, cool facecloths and refreshing drinks before being shown to our villa and introduced to the Ifuru App. This handy tool provides all the information you need and allows you to book activities, room services, laundry pickups, and buggies to transport you around the Island. However, with such stunning surroundings, walking is a pleasure every step of the way.
What sets Ifuru apart? Opening in September 2023, it’s home to the Maldives’ first permanent skydiving drop zone, offering adrenaline junkies a chance to experience the islands from an entirely new perspective.

There are unexpected delights around every corner, like a whimsical Barbie tower straight out of the recent Barbie movie, where you can help yourself to delicious ice cream. Unique “kissing spots” are scattered across the island, offering picture-perfect romantic moments, and for late-night cravings, a magic button calls the Ifuru Eats buggy which delivers snacks right to your door. It’s these fun, quirky touches that make Ifuru feel like more than just a luxury resort – it’s an experience full of surprises.

Ifuru’s concept is all about challenging the ordinary and igniting your sense of adventure. The resort boasts a wide range of amenities and experiences, from thrilling activities like skydiving to a fantastic selection of bars and restaurants. It’s designed to awaken your adventurous side while still providing all the luxury and relaxation you’d expect in the Maldives.

Ifuru Island is also a natural gem. The beach, easily one of the most stunning and unspoilt I’ve come across, stretches 1.2km with powdery white sand, flanked by swaying palm trees and the clearest, most inviting blue sea. It’s absolute bliss for swimming, with uninterrupted views and plenty of space to feel like you’ve got it all to yourself – making it feel like your own private paradise.

Accommodation

The accommodation is perfectly positioned along the sunset side of the island, with many villas offering direct access to the beach and breathtaking sea views, all backed by lush tropical jungle gardens.

Ifuru Island

The island’s concept centres around ‘Retreats’ and ‘Villages.’ There are 147 beach suites and villas, offering a wide range of room types to cater to any combination of guests, whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a gathering of friends or family, or a very special wedding celebration.

We stayed in a Sunset Beach Villa, elegantly designed with a clean, contemporary style featuring white walls accented with splashes of blue and wooden floors. The sumptuous king-sized bed, dressed in crisp white linens with a turquoise headboard, a desk, a cosy sofa, and a wardrobe with a dressing area add to the comfort. The spacious indoor-outdoor bathroom is a showstopper, featuring a free-standing bathtub, an enclosed shower, and an open-air one for a refreshing, natural touch.

The villa is equipped with coffee and tea-making facilities, a TV, Wi-Fi, excellent lighting controls, a minibar, and air conditioning. Our welcome bottle of bubbly and sweet treats added an extra nice touch.
What makes these villas extra special is the private terrace, accessed through floor-to-ceiling doors. Here, you’ll find a tropical garden with a dipping pool and sun loungers, leading directly to the most blissful stretch of beach. My morning swims quickly became a highlight of the stay.

Restaurants & Bars

The ‘Exclusively Yours’ premium all-inclusive package lets guests fully indulge in Ifuru’s six dining options and four bars. With ingredients sourced straight from the island’s vegetable garden, every meal is as fresh as it is delicious.

The Social House is the island’s hub, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet-style. Here, you can embark on a fantastic culinary journey with an impressive selection of high-quality dishes from around the world.

The Social House

The central Hubba Hubba Bar is set by a gorgeous pool right next to the sea, which is framed by picture-perfect swaying palm trees. I found myself snapping photos constantly -whether it was the soft morning light, the bright midday sun, or the jaw-dropping sunsets, every hour had its vibe. Here, you can sip cocktails all day or dance the night away barefoot in the sand. And if you’re feeling peckish, order delicious stone-baked pizza by the meter at Pizza by the Pool.

There are two à la carte restaurants. Palm Grill offers a rustic, open-air setting where you can enjoy the sea breeze. Specialising in locally caught fresh fish and grilled steaks, it caters to everyone – from meat lovers to vegans. The Waterfront boasts a prime setting overlooking the ocean and offers a vibrant fine dining experience, serving freshly made dishes infused with the flavours of Asia and a touch of the Mediterranean and notes of South America. We dined here on our first evening and it was a proper treat.

The Beach Club is the perfect spot to unwind, offering a beachside café and bar ideal for a post-water sports bite or a refreshing swim break. Or simply order cocktails and lounge by the sea and relax…

We had an exceptional dinner under the stars, by candlelight on the beach, indulging in freshly caught Yellow Fin Tuna Tataki, Rolled Octopus, and Oven-Roasted Lobster Tail, all followed by a decadent chocolate dessert….a pretty sort of special dining experience!

Facilities at Ifuru

Ifuru caters for every sort of beachside activity you could wish for. There’s a host of water sports which are led by an experienced team at the Blue Wave Dive Centre, which is fully equipped for scuba diving, and excursions. I went on a led snorkelling trip to the nearby reef which was teaming with colourful marine life.

Ifuru Diving Centre

For the adventurous, there’s no shortage of water sports to dive into! Whether it’s jet skis, Seabobs, or fun rides, motorised options will get your adrenaline pumping. Prefer something more peaceful? Try windsurfing, catamaran sailing, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. Or set sail on a sunset charter cruise. And for the ultimate thrill-seekers, a skydive drop zone! Skydiving is seasonal, running from November to March, so plan your jump accordingly.

For land lovers, there’s plenty to keep you active too – tennis courts, volleyball, and the 24/7 Star Fitness facility, packed with top-notch cardio and strength-training equipment.

As a bit of a yogi, I was thrilled to join a holistic yoga class at the island’s Xanadu Spa, a rejuvenating sanctuary. This tranquil space also offers a wide range of beauty and body treatments, (I can highly recommend the expert massages and facials!) as well as separate male and female plunge pools, saunas, and steam rooms for the ultimate relaxation.

The Coconut Kids Club and Little Explorers Club will keep the little ones entertained, so adults can relax by the beachfront infinity pool without worry. And for the young at heart, the Play All Day Recreation Centre and Indoor Cinema offer endless fun, with games and activities galore, and even family movie nights.

Ifuru wedding

Ifuru offers a stunning, intimate location for those dreaming of an Indian Ocean wedding. During our stay, we witnessed a private beach ceremony beneath swaying palm trees, beside the sparkling blue sea…the ultimate romantic setting!
