Seated quickly in the elegant surroundings of Vanda restaurant, I found that the service was slick and timely.

It’s a much calmer place to indulge than airside, where you’ll pay considerably more for the treat too. Convenient and comfortable, I fully intend to use Sofitel Gatwick North as an airport rendezvous in the future.

The chicken and prawn wonton soup arrives light and aromatic, the perfect choice for an easy-to-digest starter.

The sizzling seafood platter combines a range of seafood, including prawns, mussels and squid, and vegetables with flair. A side of garlicky pak choi and steamed jasmine rice rounds out the meal.

There are plenty of alcoholic options to accompany the meal, from wine and spirits to beer, but after the champagne, I opt for green tea, intending to sleep better. It’s an excellent decision, the refreshing green tea is the perfect complement for the pan-Asian food at Vanda

The quality of the food leaves little room for regret, even if dessert must be skipped thanks to the generous portion sizes.

It’s easy enough to stagger back to my room for a quick, but indulgent shower with those lovely Balmain toiletries, but I have a final task before bedtime. One significant benefit of staying overnight at Sofitel Gatwick North is access to twilight baggage check-in. Airlines such as EasyJet allow passengers to drop off hold luggage the evening before, saving valuable time the following morning. An extra hour or so in bed when you have a 6 am flight is priceless.
