The key to finding the right one is discovering an island that aligns with your budget, unique taste, and connection to nature. This sophisticated resort offers a meticulously curated journey where modern elegance meets the untouched splendour of the Maldives.

Travel and Location

The impeccable service began as soon as we arrived at Malé Airport, where we were whisked away to a luxury speedboat for a supremely comfortable 45-minute journey to Patina. As we docked at the marina, we were greeted by friendly faces and a hand-to-heart gesture unique to Patina. Our bags vanished without a trace (rematerializing in our room), and we were introduced to our Essentialist (Patina’s answer to a butler), Darya, who took care of us flawlessly throughout our stay.

Patina is situated on the largest of the four Fari Islands within the manmade archipelago, in the North Malé Atoll. The Fari Islands feature a dynamic resort community, with The Ritz-Carlton already established on one neighbouring island and a Capella Hotel set to join soon. Another island is dedicated to staff from all the resorts. Embracing a novel concept, the Fari Islands allow guests to seamlessly travel between resorts by boat. Visitors can explore a variety of dining options, discover impressive art installations, and browse the boutique shops at Fari Marina Village. The Beach Club, anchored by a 20-berth marina that accommodates yachts up to 80 feet, has caught the attention of the superyacht crowd as the Maldives rises in prominence as a prime destination. Patina is definitely on their radar.

About Patina, Maldives

Patina, which opened in May 2021 is recognised as one of the best resorts in Asia, ranking 11th in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2023, and it’s easy to see why. First impressions of the island reveal a remarkably lush and vibrant paradise, where verdant tropical greenery is framed by pristine golden beaches, crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters, and a marina filled with sleek superyachts.

The resort is an architectural masterpiece, designed with contemporary elegance by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, who has placed a strong emphasis on sustainability. Every element on the island is thoughtfully sourced, from solar panels on all villa roofs to the use of renewable materials in construction. Water is carefully preserved, filtered, and recycled. The resort operates with a zero-waste policy in the kitchens and has eliminated single-use plastics, showcasing an impressive commitment to the environment.

The design effortlessly combines style with tranquillity, creating soothing spaces that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. Low-level open-plan structures, defined by clean lines and natural materials like wood and stone, contribute to the resort’s understated elegance. Muted hues of grey and beige further enhance the calming atmosphere, while stone pillars and wooden stick ceilings with fans throughout emphasize the harmonious connection to nature. The result is a serene retreat that feels both luxurious and deeply grounded in its surroundings.

The island never feels crowded, except perhaps at breakfast, the only time we noticed the resort was full. Served at Portico, it’s a great spot for people-watching. This stylish open-air restaurant overlooks an infinity pool, with sun loungers and palm trees draped in sisal canopies for shade, all set against the backdrop of the ocean.

One touch we particularly loved was the bicycles provided to each guest, conveniently stored on a rack at your villa. They made it easy to explore the island at your own pace. If cycling isn’t your thing, you can simply message your Essentialist on WhatsApp to arrange a buggy for a hassle-free ride around the island.

Service at Patina is next level. Every single staff member was not just charming and helpful but somehow always there when you needed them, without ever feeling intrusive.

Accommodation at Patina

There are 90 superbly appointed one, two and three-bedroom beach and water villas, plus 20 Fari Studios. We stayed in a stunning beach villa. Upon arrival, the table was set with champagne and perfectly made macarons. In the hallway a pair of raffia Panama hats and umbrellas for those rainy moments. And here’s a clever touch: a cool wooden bracelet that doubles as a room key, so you’ll never have to hunt for that pesky key again.

The resort’s stylish, natural design seamlessly extends into the villa. Sleek grey slate flooring extends seamlessly throughout, while natural materials in soft, soothing hues create a warm and inviting space. The super king-sized bed dressed in superior grey bed linen and pillows designed for dreamers was so divine, that it practically begged you to stay in bed all morning. But who needs to venture far when comfort surrounds you?

This sumptuous villa invites you to kick back on the comfy sofa with a freshly made espresso, flip through the coffee table books, and snack on some fresh tropical fruit. Or perhaps treat yourself to something from the well-stocked minibar?

Wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning ocean views and silently sliding doors open onto a spacious private terrace bedecked with rattan furniture, tucked away by green shrubbery. Here, you’ll find a delightful dipping pool, sun loungers, a hammock, an outdoor bathtub, and a pathway leading straight to the white sandy beach – my idea of bliss.

Every detail has been carefully considered – electric blackout blinds, international plug sockets placed exactly where you need them, well-designed lighting, and a fabulous shower room (both indoor and outdoor). Delicious-smelling Haeckels bath products, sourced from the beaches of Margate, curated exclusively for Patina, and there’s plenty of wardrobe space, along with robes and slippers. And the real joy, a Japanese-style smart toilet with washing facilities and a heated seat!

Food & drink

Dining at Patina is a true feast for the senses, with a fantastic range of restaurants that all deliver superb quality. The resort emphasises conscious cuisine, using ingredients sourced from their flourishing herb and vegetable gardens. With a handpicked team of head chefs adding their unique flair to every menu, each dining experience was nothing short of exceptional.

Portico is the resort’s all-day dining spot, perfectly situated by the pool and lagoon. Breakfast offers a little bit of everything, from poached eggs and avocado to freshly baked pastries, Chinese congee and an array of health-inspiring squeezed juices. For lunch and dinner, the à la carte menu shines with Asian specialities, alongside a variety of options like Mediterranean poke bowls, pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches.

Helios is set right on the beach under a canopy of palm trees, with jute and cotton sails swaying between them. It’s a dreamy place to watch the sunset, with wooden tables nestled in the sand and a soft glow from the lamps. A highlight was the crispy lobster Kataïfi, which I could eat on repeat. Follow that up with the Saffron Sea Bream and Za’atar Tenderloin, and you’re in for a real treat.

Fari Beach Club is the perfect place to unwind, whether you’re lounging by the stunning pool or kicking back with a drink, some great food, and music. With a menu offering a variety of international cuisine, we indulged in delicious sushi and Buddha bowls, grazing our way through an effortlessly chic afternoon.

Prepare to be seduced at Brasa, where Latin-inspired fire, smoke, and spice create an astonishingly good dining experience with rustic grilled meat dishes from the Patagonian region of South America. From our front-row seats, we watched the culinary magic unfold, savouring a tasting menu that featured specialities like Oyster Leche De Tigre, Pulpo a la Brasa, and Wagyu Tenderloin with charred Caesar and chimichurri.

Our private dining experience at ROOTS was one of the most memorable moments of my stay – dining in Patina’s herb and vegetable garden at the chef’s sharing table. We enjoyed a meticulously prepared six-course tasting menu with wine pairings, crafted by Chef Mihira and charmingly served by Jamaan.

Chef Mihira’s dishes, inspired by slow food philosophies, celebrated pure, seasonal ingredients. Picture freshly made sourdough with cashew truffle and honey vegan butter, a platter of small delights presented like a private Maldivian island with vegan seed caviar and stuffed hibiscus flowers, and inventive creations like watermelon carpaccio and pumpkin five ways gnocchi. The meal ended on a sweet note with smooth, creamy white pebbles and crunchy granola sand – a true plant-based masterpiece.

For more culinary delights, you can explore Farine, a contemporary European bistro, or Kôen, where Japanese and Nordic cuisines converge. There’s also the Wok Society, a lively Hong Kong-style eatery. And don’t miss the food trucks, like GoGo Burger, and the real icing on the cake –Tik Tuk Gelato, a caravan serving the finest Italian ice cream…and of course Veli Bar for cocktails and champagne!
