Introduction

It’s been many years since my last visit to Florence – back when I was 14, holidaying with a school friend. I still remember those beautiful, cobbled streets, charming bridges over the Arno, and the aroma wafting from bustling pizzerias. Another visit was long overdue! Italy in autumn has its own magic; the air is mild, the crowds thinner, and that golden Tuscan sun still shines brightly. This time, I returned with fresh eyes and a deeper appreciation for Florence’s layers of art, history, and life. Join me as I stay in the stunning La Gemma Hotel and rediscover the city that left an imprint all those years ago – Florence, as vibrant and captivating as ever!

This time, instead of retreating to a Tuscan villa outside the city, I stayed right in the heart of Florence at La Gemma, a stunning five-star hotel. Serenely nestled on the famous Via Calimala, La Gemma offered the perfect base for diving into the city’s rich sights and sounds. With Florence’s iconic attractions -Piazza della Repubblica, the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo, and Via de’ Tornabuoni, just steps away, I was ready to fully immerse myself in everything this extraordinary city has to offer.

About La Gemma Hotel

La Gemma Hotel is housed within the magnificent 19th-century Palazzo Paoletti, a building originally constructed in 1895 by architect Tito Bellini. Now reimagined by the Cecchi family, a talented and forward-thinking team with a wealth of experience in art, architecture, fashion, and design, La Gemma aims to offer Florence’s finest hospitality with an abundance of authentic Florentine charm.
Stepping into this elegant, design-forward Florentine hotel, I was immediately captivated by the vibrant, green-themed décor – a striking nod to Florence’s iconic cathedral. The palette, with its deep greens, soft pinks, and gentle ivories, harmonises beautifully with bold geometric patterns, luxurious marbles, plush textiles, and custom furnishings, creating a space that’s both stylish and steeped in the city’s artistic spirit.

Accommodation at La Gemma

The hotel boasts 39 uniquely crafted rooms and suites, designed by top Italian interior designers. Our suite on the 4th floor felt more like stepping into a chic Florentine residence than a typical hotel room. It exuded an air of relaxed luxury, blending Florence’s rich artistic heritage with touches of vintage glamour and a modern edge. Gaze out the window, and the splendour of Florence unfolds before you.

Rich parquet floors, floor-to-ceiling curtains, and cream-panelled walls, a framed fern-patterned feature wall with emerald green alcoves displaying beautiful ceramics by Gio Ponti. Enhanced by Art Deco-inspired accents, and a soft, luxurious palette of muted greens and blush pinks. Sink into a plush, deep green velvet sofa, or sage-coloured cocktail chairs, with a marble-topped coffee table adorned with artful books, fresh flowers, and welcome chocolate truffles – the perfect space to unwind.

The king-sized bed was irresistible, draped deliciously in the softest Italian linens with pillows that seemed to beckon at any hour. Thoughtful details like a brass trolley mini-bar, fridge, espresso machine, Marshall speaker, multiple USB outlets (which I appreciate), and great WiFi added convenience, while a wall-mounted TV and even a kitchenette with a golden sink offered both elegance and functionality, making it a suite I could have happily called home.

In the marble bathroom, a spacious walk-in shower, brass fittings, a bidet, and fluffy cotton bathrobes by Rivolta Carmignani awaited, alongside slippers, a hairdryer, and aromatic products by Votary, adding a final touch of indulgence to this beautifully crafted space.

Dining at La Gemma – LUCA’s

Breakfast is a refined affair at LUCA’s restaurant, where the à la carte menu offers everything from freshly squeezed juices and seasonal fruit to granola, yoghurt, pastries, bread and hearty and healthy cooked options. The Eggs Benedict was so exceptional – possibly the best I’ve ever had, that I couldn’t resist ordering it two mornings in a row.

Enjoy all-day drinks or coffee at the fabulous LUCA bar, designed in striking green with a black-and-white tiled floor, mirrored ceiling, and a gleaming bar. I highly recommend starting with a pre-dinner cocktail!

Dinner at La Gemma Hotel is an experience that must be savoured to truly appreciate its magnificence. At LUCA’s by Paulo Airaudo, traditional Tuscan flavours are expertly reimagined with a sophisticated, innovative twist, making it a real culinary gem.

At LUCA, the passion and expertise behind every detail are immediately palpable – a testament to the vision of Italian-Argentinian chef Paulo Airaudo. His international experience and commitment to seasonal ingredients are evident in each dish. With a career spanning renowned kitchens in Geneva, Tuscany, London, Colombia, and most recently Spain and Hong Kong, Airaudo brings a global perspective and the unwavering dedication that earned him two Michelin stars in San Sebastián. Dining here feels like experiencing a refined version of Tuscan cuisine, reimagined through the lens of a master chef. Seated on the racing green velvet banquettes, draped in ferns, with tables dressed in white linen and a top-notch view of the open kitchen, we enjoyed a tremendous five-course fine dining experience with paired wines and impeccable service.

Our exceptional meal at LUCA by Paulo Airaudo was a journey of flavours, beginning with an artichoke consommé, brightened with lemon and ginger – light, fresh, and a perfect palate cleanser. Paired with a glass of Champagne Michel Gonet Flavaux ‘LeVarlan’ Blanc de Noir, the meal quickly elevated. A welcome from the kitchen introduced crispy lobster burrata tartlets – bite-sized bliss with creamy lobster chunks.

The final amuse-bouche was a luxurious mouthful of oyster jelly, Champagne mousse, and caviar, delivering a taste sensation that set the bar high.

The sourdough bread came fresh from the oven, accompanied by crunchy, spindle-thin grissini and fabulous olive oil. The Gamberi Rossi with beetroot, dill, and sour cream was sublime – fat, succulent raw prawns in a light, flavourful sauce, so delicious we were caught committing “fare la scarpetta” (mopping up the plate with bread) like true Italians. Next, we indulged in the Bottone di Patate e Taleggio, delicate potato and Taleggio parcels bathed in a luxurious vin jaune sauce cooked to absolute perfection. Following that, we were treated to the freshest monkfish in beurre blanc and zucchini a beautifully balanced dish that showcased the delicate flavours of the fish.

Dessert was an intriguing balance of sweet and savoury – a velvety goat’s cheese flan with sweet potato, its richness cut by a tangy balsamic that brightened each bite. The meal concluded with delicate petit fours and a glass of dessert wine, leaving us utterly satisfied yet already yearning to relive every delicious moment.

Allure Spa at La Gemma

If you’re in need of some serious pampering, the Allure Spa is just the place. Tucked away from the city’s buzz, it’s a serene escape blending ancient wellness rituals with modern luxury. The treatment menu is heavenly, offering everything from soothing massages to rejuvenating facials and holistic therapies. I went for a facial, and the therapist Michelle  – trained in the Biologique Recherche method, tailored every step to my skin’s needs. By the end, I felt completely refreshed and glowing – a little reminder of just how good it feels to indulge now and then.

Exploring Florence in 48 hours

With just 48 hours in Florence, I had a lot to pack in. Balancing the iconic sights, capturing the city’s essence, and leaving room to simply enjoy it is always a challenge. I was determined to immerse myself in Florence’s art, history, and daily life… I’ve put together my top tips. These barely scratch the surface—but who says I’m not planning to return soon?

First, walk everywhere! Florence is a compact city, perfect for exploring on foot. As you wander, you’ll stumble upon beautiful piazzas, elegant architecture, and charming shops around every corner. Every street invites discovery, whether it’s a quiet courtyard, a bustling café, or an unexpected art display.

Uffizi Gallery

You simply can’t visit Florence without exploring the iconic Uffizi Gallery. Situated next to Piazza della Signoria and near the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi offers a rich taste of Renaissance grandeur. Housing over 6,000 artworks (though only around 2,200 are on display at any one time), the gallery rotates its collection to ensure the preservation of these masterpieces while giving visitors a fresh experience each time.

Each hall has its own atmosphere, transforming a stroll through the Uffizi into a journey through art history. Expect to be captivated by works like Botticelli’s Primavera, Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo, Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch, Caravaggio’s Medusa, and Titian’s Venus of Urbino.

Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens

A visit to the Pitti Palace is a step into Renaissance luxury. Once home to the powerful Medici family, this grand palace near the Ponte Vecchio showcases masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens in the ornate Palatine Gallery, while the Royal Apartments reveal the opulent lifestyle of Florence’s nobility. Outside, the lush Boboli Gardens offer stunning views and peaceful pathways, making the Pitti Palace a perfect blend of art, history, and tranquillity in Florence.

Procacci

Try to make time for a visit to Procacci, a charming 130-year-old gourmet grocer that embodies a touch of Florentine magic and offers the perfect light refreshment. Known for its panino tartufato – a petite truffle paste sandwich – quite delicious! This spot offers a bite of the city’s essence and paired with a glass of prosecco, it becomes the perfect, quintessentially Florentine experience.

Scuola del Cuoio

Florence is a treasure trove of leather goods. For a gorgeous bag or wallet, head to the Mercato di San Lorenzo, just around the corner from La Gemma Hotel. Alternatively, visit the Scuola del Cuoio manufactory and craft school, established after World War II to train disadvantaged locals as skilled artisans. The top students craft stylish, handcrafted items such as wallets, belts, and desk accessories from luxurious materials like calfskin and alligator. These unique pieces are sold at the on-site store, offering a perfect blend of craftsmanship and heritage.

Quercioli & Lucherini Snc

Pop into Quercioli & Lucherini Snc – a classic, family-run lingerie boutique – and treat yourself to some beautiful new lingerie, nightwear, or perhaps a splendid pair of cosy socks – a great memento.

Harry’s Bar

Whether in Italy or not, I love a Negroni, so a visit to Harry’s Bar was top of my list. This iconic spot, open since 1953, retains much of its mid-century charm, from the Murano glass lamps to the demure martini glasses. A celebrity favourite, it offers classic romance, live piano, and a flawless Negroni. It’s a true summer hotspot, but perfect any time of year for indulging in a timeless experience.

All’Antico Vinaio

Queuing for the most sought-after sandwich in Florence was worth the wait! All’Antico Vinaio, founded in 1989 by the Mazzanti family, is famous for its Tuscan schiacciata sandwiches. Situated on Via dei Neri, it has earned global acclaim for its top-quality ingredients like prosciutto and truffle cream. My Tartufo sandwich, with prosciutto cotto al tartufo, mozzarella fior di latte, and crema di carciofi e basilico, was delicious!

Salvatore Ferragamo

A visit to the Salvatore Ferragamo shop and museum in Florence is a must for any fashion lover. Located in the heart of the city, the museum showcases the legendary designer’s iconic creations, from the famous Vara pumps to innovative shoes worn by Hollywood stars. With exhibits that trace Ferragamo’s fascinating journey from craftsmanship to high fashion, it offers a unique glimpse into the history of Italian luxury. The shop, features the brand’s latest collections, making it the perfect stop for both fashion enthusiasts and collectors.

Rediscovering Florence after all these years has been everything I hoped for and more. Staying at La Gemma made it truly special; I only wish I could have stayed longer. I won’t wait so long to return next time!
