Prepare to relinquish the frenetic pace of everyday life and surrender to a truly holistic vacation by escaping to the captivating heights of the Dolomites in Northern Italy where the ethereal mountain air beckons. Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti Location

Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti is set in the pedestrianised historic heart of Ortisei – St. Ulrich, a captivating community that seamlessly blends German, Italian, and Ladin-speaking traditions in the South Tyrol region. This charming town, adorned with Alpine chalets and pastel-painted Tyrolean houses, is perched at an elevation of 1,236 meters above sea level in the lush Gardena Valley, encircled by the awe-inspiring Dolomites, a UNESCO-protected site. From this privileged vantage point, the resort unveils a magnificent panorama of a particularly famous group of peaks known as the Geisler, along with the rich emerald scenery. I was in awe of its beauty and struck by the quality of air, imbued with an invigorating freshness and carrying the crisp essence of the mountains.

This resort is great to visit all year round. Whether you want to indulge in winter sports on the slopes, embark on invigorating hikes or e-bike rides during the spring, summer, or autumn seasons, or simply relax and enjoy the extensive spa facilities and the impressive vista, its location is ideal. Convenient cable car and funicular connections are available, which provide access to the enchanting ski slopes and hiking areas of the Alpe di Siusi, Mounts Seceda, and Rasciesa and it is within easy reach of the renowned Sellaronda, the world’s largest ski carousel.

A brief stroll from the hotel leads to the pretty village streets which offer an array of boutiques, gift shops, ski-rental services, bars and trattorias where you can savour the flavours of the region. Ortisei was once a bustling trading centre, and home to the ancient craft of woodcarving which continues to thrive, a testament to the region’s rich artistic heritage. This age-old tradition dates back to the 17th century and once provided farmers with an extra source of income during the long winter nights. Today, artisans carry on this legacy, and their intricate wooden dolls, Christmas cribs, and figurines capture the essence of their craftsmanship. Plus, if you visit the region’s churches, you’ll find the altars and facades adorned with sacral art, which bears witness to the intricate beauty of woodcarving.

The nearest international airports, Innsbruck and Verona, are situated at distances of 72 miles and 115 miles, respectively. However, I flew from London Heathrow to Milan, which is approximately a 3.5-hour drive to Ortisei. The hotel has an arrangement with SIXT cars which can be hired at a reasonable rate. Guests can park in the hotel’s private underground car park. For those arriving by train, Bolzano, which is approximately 22 miles away has excellent railway connections.

On arrival, you will receive a warm welcome and a glass of prosecco, if that’s your tipple…the perfect start to an idyllic stay.

As the oldest gem within the esteemed ADLER group, ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI is lovingly managed by the seventh generation of the illustrious Sanoner family, who live nearby in the village of Ortisei. What once began as a modest tavern and guest house, acquired by Josef Anton Sanoner in the year 1810, has blossomed into a resplendent haven for the discerning traveller. The guest rooms are a fusion of traditional and contemporary décor. My junior suite was spacious and airy, a large balcony offered a fabulous view of Ortesei and the mountains beyond. Designed in Alpine style with wood panelling and a wooden floor, two upholstered armchairs, a desk, a divinely comfortable bed with a carved wooden headboard and a table set with fresh fruit and water which comes freshly filtered from the mountains. The bathroom provides both a bath and a shower, plus a selection of Adler products, a stylish jute tote bag, fluffy towelling bath robes and flip flops which the guests happily roam around in as they make their way to and from the spa and pool facilities.

DOLOMITI ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI is a sanctuary for weary travellers seeking respite and rejuvenation. The elegant Spa provides an array of treatments and therapies designed to invigorate your senses and restore your well-being. You can immerse yourself in Alpine baths infused with local hay and pine needles, surrender to the therapeutic embrace of essential oils derived from fir tree, stone pine, mountain pine, and juniper, or luxuriate in the revitalizing rasul clay baths. I had a luxurious full body scrub and massage which I can highly recommend. Adler also has their own range of natural skincare products.

I  was lucky enough to experience the transformative power of the Cryo Box treatment.  This holistic cutting-edge therapy combines the power of extreme cold with targeted cryotherapy techniques, promoting circulation and reducing inflammation. It stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, leaving you with a renewed sense of energy and a heightened state of well-being. Initially, I had reservations about trying this unconventional treatment. The notion of stepping into a chamber, completely undressed, and subjecting myself to temperatures as low as minus 180 degrees Celsius (I experienced minus 125 degrees) for five minutes seemed absurd. However, I can report that it wasn’t unpleasant at all, in fact, I rather enjoyed the experience. Afterwards, I felt invigorated and full of energy, a sensation that lasted throughout the day. Moreover, there are claims that you can burn up to 700 calories per session, which, if true, definitely makes me keen to give it a try more often!

At the heart of the resort lies AGUANA Water World, an expansive retreat spanning 3,500 square meters. Here, you can immerse yourself in a world of aquatic delights with indoor and outdoor heated and unheated swimming pools. Relax in the serene salt grotto, indulge in saunas and Turkish baths, breathe in the delicate scents of flowers in the steam bath, a women-only area which is nestled within a rock grotto and experience ultimate pampering in the whirlpool crowned by a crystal pyramid.

A recent addition to this haven of relaxation is the Lakeside Sauna, an ethereal retreat situated by the tranquil lake with awe-inspiring views of the Sassolungo. Here, you can experience the organic hay sauna, where the aromatic fragrance of dried grasses stimulates your metabolism. One of the spa’s more unique rituals is the Aufguss, a sauna ceremony that transports you to a realm of pure relaxation. Dressed in cotton wraps guests line the sauna benches, and sit back for 15 minutes to the sounds of pagan music, with an energetic young man wafting aromas around the space with a towel… a wild and wonderful experience which I repeated several times as I loved it so much.

After the Aufguss ceremony, my companion and I struck up a conversation with another guest, a busy man who found it difficult to make time for long holidays. He shared that he and his wife were visiting to celebrate his birthday for the second consecutive year. He expressed their intention to make it an annual tradition, as they found that within just three days at Adler Spa, they could unwind and relax completely, unlike other places where it would take them a week or longer. It became evident to me that this place holds a unique charm, making it an appealing destination for regular visits.

Just across the road, you’ll find the neighbouring ADLER Spa Resort BALANCE, a haven for comprehensive health experiences frequently visited by sportspeople. At this resort, you can delve into a variety of medical treatments, including detox and weight loss programs, stress management, and aesthetic medicine.

I joined a guided hike with a small group. We strolled through the village and reached the Funicular railway system, which transported us to the elevated hillside. With our knowledgeable guide Gernot leading the way, we embarked on a delightful walk, soaking in the spectacular views of the Dolomites.  It’s an experience not to be missed!

Dining at ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI

The dining experience at Adler is excellent, the package includes breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner, while lunch is available for an additional cost. Breakfast is a delightful affair, featuring a generous buffet of fresh fruits, juices, yoghurts, pastries, an assortment of bread, waffles, pancakes, mueslis, local meats, cheeses, and made-to-order eggs. I highly recommend trying Speck, a lightly smoked cured ham native to South Tyrol.

Bread & Pastries

Make sure not to miss the afternoon tea, served in the bar area, where you can indulge in a delectable array of cakes. My personal favourite was the apple strudel.

They offer an outstanding selection of wines and provide the chance to engage in a wine-tasting experience, just as I did, in their well-stocked wine cellar. The cellar offers a wide range of local producers from South Tyrol and Italy, along with renowned wineries from around the world.
