An overnight stay at the secluded coastal aparthotel, The Rosevine Portscatho
The Rosevine is a unique boutique hotel situated in a tranquil spot on the Roseland Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Cornwall. It is down a dead-end lane; the road finishes a few hundred yards later at the Porthcurnick beach. If you are looking for a comfortable stay in a peaceful location with unspoilt coastal views, The Rosevine fits the bill.

Accommodation at The Rosevine
As an aparthotel, all accommodation options include facilities for self-catering, a kitchen area with a fridge, dishwasher, microwave, combi oven, and crockery, etc. Choose from a studio suitable for one to two guests or a family-sized apartment with a separate room containing bunk beds suitable for children. A standalone 4-bedroom house, The Lookout, can be rented for larger groups.

I was staying in one of the sea-facing family apartments with a long balcony and a spectacular view of the gardens with the sea glistening beyond. The spacious sleeping area was dominated by a very inviting bed, the bunk bedroom, and bathroom doors led off from this space.

A light and airy kitchenette area with a sofa, fold-down table, and seating ran the length of the balcony. The fridge contained a small carton of milk, always welcome after a journey, a selection of teas and coffee, and a couple of small packets of biscuits.
The refreshments were welcome as The Rosevine is tucked away from it all; the nearest shops are either a short drive back up the lane to a garage or in Portscatho, a fifteen-minute walk along the coastal path. For guests planning to cook, the best option would be to bring some basic provisions.
The bathroom was clean and modern with good quality towels, flannels, a bath with overhead shower attachment, and toiletries.

The initial impression for me was how peaceful it was, great for a recharge after a busy few months.
The lush and semi-tropical lawned gardens are ideal for relaxing with a book or a refreshing drink. The uninterrupted view down to the sea is ever-present.
Hotel Facilities The Rosevine
Within the hotel is a restaurant, bar, and breakfast room, ideal for guests looking to stay on a hotel basis rather than self-catering. A seasonal dinner menu is served daily at the restaurant with a choice of options for each course. Pricing is reasonable; £29.95 for two courses and £35.00 for three with a market fish dish changing according to what the boats have brought in. The wine list has a selection of wines available by the glass as well as bottles. Booking the restaurant in advance is advisable, as there are no other restaurants close by.

An excellent breakfast buffet is served daily with a choice of freshly cooked hot options. Rates for accommodation with breakfast and dinner are available as options when making a booking.

The hotel has a comfortable lounge as well as a dedicated children’s playroom for families.

The indoor pool is a calm space, perfect for a rainy day. It is a private pool with 45-minute slots available to book through reception at no extra charge.
Exploring the coastline
I know Cornwall well, but had never been to the Roseland Peninsula before. I set off down the lane towards the sea, a typical Cornish road with a gradient sloping down. The beach was quiet with a solitary group of friends playing a ball game and some dog walkers.

Just before the beach is the coastal footpath, to the right, the village of Portscatho is visible and waiting to be explored. A short distance along the path is the Hidden Hut, a small outside café with seating, offering snacks and drinks with a daily lunch menu. This is an ideal place to stop and soak in the countryside and beach.

The path wends along the cliffs until you reach Portscatho, a typical Cornish village with whitewashed houses and a harbour, where there are a few pubs, some shops, a well-stocked store with general provisions, and a shop selling homemade Cornish gelato.
Dining at the Rosevine
I was booked in for dinner at the hotel restaurant. I freshened up after my walk with a soak in the bath and was ready for a meal. The restaurant has large windows looking out over the gardens with the sea beyond.

The menu is based on freshly cooked seasonal local produce. I chose a dish of Cornish mussels in cider for my main course; they were plump, juicy, and delicious. To accompany my food, a glass of Alandra Vino Branco from Portugal, a bright and citrusy white wine.

For dessert, a burnt Basque cheesecake with a tart cranberry compote.
The Rosevine is blissfully quiet. I drifted off to sleep in no time. The bed was very comfortable. I woke up refreshed and ready to head off on an adventure.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant and adjoining breakfast room. There is a buffet with pastries, cereals, fruit, and yoghurt. Hot options are cooked to order.
Getting to The Rosevine
The Rosevine is in an isolated area, with no public transport; a car would be useful for a longer stay. The closest train stations are Truro or St Austell, both being around half an hour’s drive from the hotel. You can cut the journey down by flying into Newquay Airport, with flights available from major UK airports. With a hire car, The Rosevine is around forty-five minutes drive from Newquay.

The Rosevine is in a gorgeous, serene setting close to the unspoilt coastline of the Roseland Peninsula. It would be the perfect place to go for a short break or a longer holiday. Its proximity to Porthcurnick beach and the southwest coast path makes it ideal for families and walkers. Further afield, on the way to St Austell, is the quintessential Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey with its historic harbour and shops. St Mawes is a quaint upmarket village on the Roseland Peninsula with a sailing club and seafood restaurants.
I was hosted for an overnight visit by The Rosevine, with dinner and breakfast, in a sea-facing family-sized apartment.
