A stay at the cool RockyPop Hotel in Flaine
If you are travelling to the French ski resort of Flaine in the Haute Savoie, the modern RockyPop Hotel is the perfect base for a holiday. Its unique and fun character sets it apart from the usual mountain hotels. Situated just steps away from the commercial centre of Flaine Forum, the location is ideal for the Grand Platières gondola, which whisks you up the mountain, as well as the many shops and restaurants on the edge of the piste.
This four-star hotel, which opened in December 2021, has everything you need for a superb ski break exploring the Grand Massif ski area. With 118 rooms ranging from small doubles to family rooms and adjoining rooms, the accommodation is flexible. If you prefer to stay on a self-catering basis, apartments can sleep from two people in a studio to ten people in an apartment with two triple rooms and a room sleeping four. For larger groups, opt for one of the cosy penthouse suites. You can choose to stay on a Bed & Breakfast or half board basis, or cater for yourself.
Watch out for the cool astronaut suit in the entrance hall to the hotel, an opportunity not to be missed for taking a fun selfie. The reception area is relaxed and informal, with staff happy to answer any questions you might have, attired in bright RockyPop themed tops. Staff are readily at hand wherever you are in the hotel.
An épicerie at the front of the hotel offers a selection of RockyPop clothing and accessories, which would make excellent gifts, along with cold drinks & snacks available to purchase throughout the day.
The rooms are stylish and chic, with bright, modern decor, tea and coffee-making facilities, a safe for your valuables, and a traditional-style telephone. Storage is slightly limited in the smaller rooms if you are travelling with a lot of ski kit.
The bathrooms are equipped with a bath, great for soaking your limbs after a hard day of skiing. An overhead shower covers those who prefer to shower. Toiletries are provided, as are plenty of towels, a robe, and slippers for the spa, which are neatly laid on the bed.
The beds are very comfortable, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep. If, like me, you are a light sleeper, you will appreciate how quiet this hotel is.
The bar on the ground floor is spacious and cosy. I loved the quirky dinosaur heads on the wall. With far-reaching views out over the mountains, this is a great place to chill at any time of day. Drinks are available from the bar from 16.00 pm, and after 18.30 pm, a selection of small tapas plates can be ordered if you prefer a lighter meal.
Three restaurants within the hotel offer a variety of cuisine. The Rockybuffet is available from 18.30 to 21.30 pm, with the theme changing daily. You can eat as much as you like from the large range of starters, main dishes and desserts.
For a typical mountain meal, you can book the Frometon, heaven for those who love classic mountain cheese dishes such as fondue, tartiflette or raclette. Frometon is open on Wednesday to Monday from 19.00 to 21.30 pm.
The Sushi House, open Tuesday through Sunday evenings, offers a range of Japanese dishes. Booking is essential.
If you are staying on a bed and breakfast basis, the continental breakfast buffet offers a selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cold meats, cheese and pastries as well as hot options.
After a hard day out skiing on the slopes, the RockyPop Nuxe spa will relax and refresh your aching body. The outstanding spa facilities include treatments, divine massages to ease tension, and a range of facials. I was delighted to be offered a full-body, deep-tissue massage with an excellent therapist, perfect after a day of skiing on the mountain with poor visibility.
The spa is free to guests staying at the hotel, the wellness area has two swimming pools, one of which is suitable for children, a hammam and sauna. Open from 10.00 am to 20.00 pm, the spa is a place to relax on white-out days or for those who choose not to ski.
Ski lockers are located on the ground floor by the hotel entrance. If you need to hire equipment, the ski shop next to the lockers makes it easy to do so without leaving the hotel.
For stylish, fun accommodation in Flaine, do consider the RockyPop Hotel. It is bound to bring a smile to your face. I enjoyed my short stay at this excellent hotel; the convenient location, range of facilities and unique character of the RockyPop Hotel made for a memorable visit.
Geneva Airport is the closest airport to Flaine, with a transfer time of just over an hour.
